How Dogs Work is an affectionate compendium of all things canine. Each page is a colorful combination of storybook drawings and playfully written text covering the eager, inquisitive face, the exuberant wagging tail, and everything in between. Tatarsky explains that your dog has 319–321 bones depending on tail length; Ken-L Ration, the first canned dog food, was not marketed until 1922, and Rin Tin Tin made it famous; and the Turnspit Dog was bred to turn the roast in the kitchen, a skill rarely prized today. For those choosing a breed, he advises that you ask: is the breed friendly, alert, reserved, quiet, earplug-vocal? Will it serve to keep your feet warm on a bitter cold night? Tatarsky gives readers the sort of book a dog might like—if they had opposable thumbs and could read.
