Summary, etc.: | "Milly and big sister Becca are members of the Midnight Club. And tonight is Milly’s first outing! At exactly midnight, Milly wakes her sister. With Becca leading the way, they tiptoe along the shadowy hall and down the creaky stairs. There’s so much adventure to be had in the middle of the night! They sit in Dad’s big chair, dip into his jar of jellybeans, try on Mom’s coat. One moment they’re frightened by a shadow that looks like a monster, and the next, they’re making shadow play of their own. A scratch at the back door has Milly’s heart going boom bump boom, but it’s just the president of the Midnight Club, their cat Oliver, who leads the way to more shenanigans. Eventually her big sister gets tired(!) but before they head back upstairs, Milly remembers the most important rule—The Midnight Club has to be a secret—and they put back dad’s jar of jellybeans and hang up mom’s coat. Then Milly, now comfortable in the midnight house and feeling bolder, leads the way back to their room, satisfied with her adventure, and with the secret of the Midnight Club safe inside her. … Although the girls may have left a clue or two about their midnight expedition …"-- |

In their shared bedroom one night, Becca, the older girl, is sleeping, while Milly, the younger, watches the clock. At midnight, she wakens her sister. Smiling, each silently makes the secret sign of the Midnight Club. Creeping past their parents' door, they walk down the creaky stairs and through the shadowy hallway to the living room and kitchen. The girls feast on Dad's jelly beans and, grabbing Mom's raincoat, hat, and scarf, cast dancing, monster-shaped shadows on the wall. After hiding traces of their visit (it's a club rule), the tired sisters head back upstairs, climb into bed together, and quickly fall asleep. The final page turn reveals the kitchen table, strewn with telltale indications of their secret escapade. Capturing the power of two sisters defining their own after-hours rules, the well-worded text creates the story, while leaving space for the illustrations to work their magic. In digitally enhanced pencil drawings with watercolor washes, Kang celebrates the children's energy, joy, and sibling solidarity. A lively picture book that imagines the pleasures of staying up after hours. Preschool-Grade 2. Copyright 2021 Booklist Reviews.
