Alice has always felt invisible. When not overshadowed by her family's relatively meager economic status, she's outshined by the wealthy students at her elite Beijing high school. But then Alice is suddenly struck with the ability to become physically invisible, prompting a scheme to help raise money to pay for her expensive tuition. She confides in Henri—a crack app programmer and her academic nemesis—her brilliant plan: an app to monetize her power by offering services only the best superspy (or someone invisible) can pull off. Of course, trouble ensues as Alice crosses ethical lines and gets in way over her head. Smart, funny, and poignant, this book is a tremendously fun read. Much of that is due to the characterization of Alice, who at times is unlikable (and thus very relatable). She's often driven by jealousy, but, through her experiences, she learns how to be confident in herself as well as how to trust others with her problems. This debut will satisfy any reader looking for a fun caper with a dash of magic. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2022 Booklist Reviews.
