520 . ‡aMal Flowers, a high school senior in a small Midwestern town, plans to spend their final year focusing on editing the school's literary magazine and preparing for college. When budget cuts lead to the cancellation of the magazine, Mal must quickly find another activity to support their college applications. With encouragement from fellow student Emerson Pike, Mal and the former magazine staff decide to create an independent zine. As the group works together outside of school approval, Mal forms new friendships and spends more time with Emerson, whose personality contrasts with Mal's careful planning. Through the experience, Mal begins to reconsider their expectations for the future and their place within their community.
