520 . ‡aAn oral history of punk as a musical, cultural, and social movement, based on interviews with musicians, designers, promoters, and other participants. The work traces the development of punk from its roots in earlier countercultural traditions through its emergence in the United Kingdom and United States in the 1970s and its subsequent cultural influence. It examines punk’s aesthetics, music, ideology, and DIY practices, with attention to its role in youth culture, fashion, and independent creative production. The narrative is based on more than 150 interviews with figures associated with the movement, including musicians such as Iggy Pop, The Sex Pistols, The Clash, and Siouxsie Sioux, as well as cultural figures such as Vivienne Westwood.
