Summary, etc.:
Worm Tarnauer's school thinks assigning each eighth grader the name of a teenager who died in the past year will make them contemplate their own mortality. Yeah, sure. But Worm didn't count on Becca Finch. Letting this girl into his head is about to change everything.

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2021 September #2
Shortly before graduation, all eighth graders in Amber Springs, Pennsylvania, are required to participate in Dead Wednesday, a program to raise awareness of local teenagers who have died from preventable causes. Students are given the photograph of a deceased teenager and must wear black T-shirts while teachers and townspeople completely ignore them, treating them as if they were dead. Robbie "Worm" Tarnauer wakes up excited on Dead Wednesday, anticipating an afternoon goofing off with his best friend, but the day takes a strange turn when the ghost of Rebecca Ann Finch appears in his classroom shortly after he is given her photo. Sassy Rebecca believes that she has materialized to "fix" shy, awkward Worm, but as the day progresses it seems that she might also need help. Heyborne's skillful narration convincingly captures the range of Worm's emotions as he experiences numerous self-revelations, and the narrator deftly varies his pitch and tone to voice numerous other teen characters. Spinelli's fans will not be disappointed with this enchanting coming-of-age story. Grades 6-9. Copyright 2021 Booklist Reviews.
