For those wishing to save the earth from environmental destruction, there are different paths to consider, not just in considering a career but also when encountering apathy and resistance. Schilling (himself a St. Regis Mohawk) delves into these topics as he profiles 10native people of North America, including members of tribes such as Ojibwe, Cree Nation, Six Nations, Navajo, Dakota, Sac, Fox, Gwich'in, and the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia. Among those profiled are an advocate for renewable energy resources, an awareness-raiser of climate change issues, and a combatant against turning native reservations into nuclear waste dumps. There's plenty of excitement in this entry in the Native Trailblazers series, both in the issues confronted (environmental racism, nuclear waste dumps, and strip mining) as well as the methods used (sometimes involving dangerous travel and exploration in order to publicize environmental crimes). One downside to this collection is the sameness of the profile format. However, informational sidebars, photographs, and a glossary of ecological and historical terms help liven this up.
