*Starred Review* Affecting a light Appalachian lilt suiting a heroine who hails from the mountainous coal-mining region of what is known as the twelfth district of Panem, McCormick plays Katniss Everdeen, the winner of the Hunger Games, in pitch-perfect tones. McCormick's voice varies from loose and easy to highly wrought as the first-person narration slides around Katniss' mixed emotions. She is uneasy with her old more-than-just-a-friend Gale, and pussyfoots around Hunger Games cowinner Peeta, even as she feigns love for him to appease the ever-present masses. After all, their supposed infatuation motivated audacious moves that left both characters alive in what was supposed to be a fight to the death in Hunger Games (also available from Scholastic and read by McCormick), the first title in this popular series. The action rachets up as the story progresses, and possible rebellion threatens the Capitol's hold on those districts forced to provide yearly Hunger Game pledges. When Katniss and Peeta are forced to fight for their lives again, old and new characters pop on the scene. From alcoholic Haymitch, played bitingly cynical, to Johanna, a former games winner, who sounds spunky and sharp-tongued, McCormick keeps listeners tuned to the action. Fans will line up for this audio, even as they eagerly anticipate the next book in the series. Also available in Playaway ($74.99). Grades 8-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
