|Summary, etc.:||On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand's godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man's life. When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Surete, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d'Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. A gruesome discovery in Stephen's Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized.|

*Starred Review* The 16th book in Penny's Gamache series takes readers to Paris, where Armand and wife Reine-Marie are awaiting the arrival of their newest grandchild. While in Paris the whole family gathers, including Gamache's godfather, millionaire Stephen Hawkins. When Hawkins is deliberately run down, Armand will not rest until the truth is revealed. Bathurst, who has been reading the series since the 11th book following the passing of the previous narrator, Ralph Cosham, returns as the impeccable voice behind the series. With this new international setting, the range of accents expands and each character is subtlety but uniquely voiced, showing the commonalities between the accents as well as the differences. The correct pronunciation of the frequent foreign names, phrases, and places enriches and enhances the audio's impact. The crime in this story has a personal impact on Gamache, and emotions are on high. Bathurst superbly manipulates tone, volume, and pace to highlight this range of emotions. Paris is described beautifully, and Bathurst lingers over these descriptive passages that will speak to any traveler's soul, especially in a year when the world is staying home. Series fans will be thrilled with this latest installment and those curious to check out Armand Gamache for the first time will be able to easily dive right in before going back to relish the 15 previous books!
